On Saturday 5th July, we went on some sort of a redemption walk (maybe), starting with a guided tour of the Igreja do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, a national monument and a striking example of brutalist architecture. As we approached the building, it looked like a huge cube of concrete; once inside, the games of light and textures were fascinating. The itinerary through Avenidas Novas took us to two other modernist churches (São João de Deus on Praça de Londres, and Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima on Avenida de Berna) and through the colourful bairro do Arco de Cego. The pilgrimage journey left us in need of earthly food and it felt good to sit down for a pic-nic in the gardens of the Fundação Gulbenkian — although we had to fight off a number of an-/hun-gry birds, it was a great moment.
A huge thank you to João Monge for organising the walk.
